The New World

Reporter: Six AM is the appointed time of death as laid down by the state of Kentucky. Oswald Danes faces his last moments on this earth. Members of the public have gathered outside the Montrose Hill State Penitentiary, but the planned protests against the death sentence have failed to appear. Which isn’t surprising given the nature of the offense. A former schoolteacher, convicted in 2006 of the rape and murder of twelve-year-old Suzie Cabena, Danes will be remembered for his infamous line of defense. Upon his arrest, he told the police, “She should have run faster.”

Esther Drummond (Alexa Havins): Did you ever hear of Torchwood?
Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer): Never mind that. Guess what I just heard. You know Steve Reynolds? Well it turns out his wife is sick. She has like leukemia or something like that. Whatever it is, it sounded long-term.
Esther: It’s British. The Torchwood Institute.
Rex: Hello. Are you listening? You see if Steve’s gotta come home that leaves a space in Venezuela. And I spent eighteen months working out the Maracaibo routes. So it’s mine. I get promoted.
Esther: Congratulations.
Rex: Thank you.
Esther: Steve’s only been married six months.
Rex: What do you want from me, you know? It’s a tragedy.
Esther: All the same, this thing might be worth following. It just got sent down. The word “Torchwood” has been emailed to every single East Coast section chief, completely bypassing security. Just one word. Torchwood.
Noah Vickers (Paul James) on the phone nearby: Following up this Torchwood incident. Just wondering if you can access the EU files.
No no. It’s not, it’s not “touchwood” it’s “torchwood”.

EMT: He’s the second one tonight. DOA’s that just won’t die.

Wales, UK 8a.m.

Esther: The paramedics, they said he didn’t stand a chance.
Dr. Vera Juarez (Arlene Tur): Looks like someone changed the rules. Miracles got… easy. It’s not only Rex who’s still alive. So is everyone else.
Esther: Sorry, I don’t get you.
Dr. Vera Juarez (Arlene Tur): It started last night.

Dr. Vera Juarez (Arlene Tur): First I knew, they called up from the morgue. They were laughing. They said, “What’s happening up there? You on strike?” Turns out, no one had died. Twenty-four hours since this hospital had a death. Not one. Not from old age, not from injury, not from sickness. All day long.
Esther: Could be just a coincidence, I suppose.
Dr. Vera Juarez (Arlene Tur): That’s what I said, yeah. Then I was on a call to St. Jude’s in Chicago. They said, “Well here’s a funny thing. Past twenty-four hours, we’ve registered no deaths.” Not one. So I called my ex-husband—he’s at Cedar Brook—same story. All day, no deaths. I tried London. I have this friend at the Royal Free Hospital. I called her. She said, “Oh that’s weird. It’s the same thing over here.” Twenty-four hours, no one’s died. What do you think of that, hm? One lucky day.

Reporter: The survival of Oswald Danes turns out to be the first incident in a much bigger story breaking live this morning.

Reporter: That’s what it’s being called. Miracle Day.

Oswald Danes (Bill Pullman): When you gonna let me go?
Alexander Peterssen (Brian Guest): I don’t think that’s possible.
Danes: I served my sentence.
Peterson: Granted the execution was… flawed.

Danes: I would maintain—my lawyers would maintain—my sentence was carried out successfully. I think what went wrong absolutely nothing. The fact that life—and the laws of life—have changed is hardly my fault.

Danes: I can guarantee you, Mr. Peterson, that when I talk of lawyers I mean the team that will be sending the governor—and I mean the governor himself, not his office but the actual man—they will be suing him for wrongful imprisonment. And I promise you that they will sue his ass to high Heaven, ’til angels sing songs of him in their laments. Is that clear?
Peterson: Perfectly.

Esther: Torchwood, that wasn’t a virus. It’s gotta be some sort of malware.
Noah: It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen. The word “Torchwood” has vanished. It’s been eradicated. If you search for Torchwood, you get no results. Nothing gets no results.
Esther: There’s gotta be something on paper.
Noah: Shelves are buried. It’s all gone [?]. I asked Yvonne. She said it was classified under the 456 regulations. She said you want to stay away.
Esther: Why?
Noah: They all died. So the story goes, anyone that worked for Torchwood was killed in action. And they died young.

Nurse on TV: These people are dead. That’s what they are, dead. And they’re sitting up in bed. They terrify me, I’m not touching them. I’m sorry, but they should be corpses. That’s what they are, living corpses.

Rex: Do I get better? Do I heal? Or do I just hurt for the rest of my life? Because if this thing keeps going, the rest of my life is forever, right?
Dr. Juarez: Rex, now listen to me. Because you might want to take something under consideration. Maybe you were lucky. You should have died last night. But when this thing happened—the miracle—it gave me time. To fix you. Without the Miracle you’d be dead.
Rex: It’s like someone cast a spell on the world. But what happens when it stops, Doc? What happens then? Do I die?

Gwen answering the phone: What is it, what’s happened?
Sergeant Andy Davidson (Tom Price): This is Sergeant Davidson confirming reports of one suspect, male, in the vicinity of St. Helen’s Hospital, Cardiff City. Suggest rendezvous 0200 hours in the agreed position. {he hangs up}
Gwen: It’s my dad, he’s in hospital. I’ve gotta see him. Sorry Rhys. We’ve gotta go back.

Esther: Just need to check on all the associations.
Guard: Okay.
Esther: Not sure where to begin.
Guard: Better find out then.
Esther: Right.

Esther: Is he gonna die?
Jack Harkness: Don’t worry about it. No one dies these days.
Gunman: You wanna bet?

Esther: So that first email last night, the one that just said “Torchwood”?
Jack: Wasn’t me. God knows who it was. But it was enough to call me back.

Professor Victor Louis Santini: Session begins. Supervised by attending surgeon Professor Victor Louis Santini and witnessed to be listed in the hospital register. The purpose of this autopsy is to determine… well, as you’ll see. Following the explosion at the CIA archive […] One of the victims has been. Yes. … I think we can… I’m sorry, they brought me in as an expert, but I don’t know what the hell this is.

Jack: Excuse me, I was wondering— {he pulls out a badge} Owen Harper, FBI—but what if you detach the head? I mean, would he stay alive without his head?
Professor Santini: I suggest we find out.
Dr. Juarez: Excuse me, you can’t do that. I mean you literally can’t. This man is not dead, he’s our patient.
Professor Santini: Your comments have been noted, Dr. Juarez.

Andy: Long time, no see.
Gwen: Oh my god.
Andy: Hey you. Big lunk. Daddy day care. Look at her.

Andy: So your father had a mild heart attack on Saturday night. And then a second on Sunday—and that was quite bad, to be honest. But he’s stable now. He’s out of ICU. Funny thing is, if you’re going to get sick, he did happen to choose the right day.

Mary Cooper (Sharon Morgan): You silly girl. I said stay away.
Gwen: How could I do that, mum?
Mary: What if someone sees you? It’s not safe. You told me. What if someone’s watching?

Mary: Look at her, though. She’s huge.
Gwen: She’s perfectly normal, mum.
Mary: Don’t you be a fool, girl. What are you feeding her, lard?
Gwen: Yes, mum. I’m feeding her lard. Keep telling her that. And by the time she’s thirteen she’ll have a complete psychological complex.
Rhys: Stop it right now, you two.

Geraint: Should I be dead, sweetheart?
Gwen: I don’t know, Dad.
Geraint: This sort of thing, your lot used to tackle.
Gwen: Yeah but Torchwood’s gone, Dad. There’s no one else left on Earth. Just me. And I’m sorry because I don’t know what to do.

Gwen: It’s all over the world. Look. Look at this. Somalia stopped fighting.
Andy: Warfare’s even worse when the bodies refuse to die.

Gwen: But this miracle, it’s specifically human. I mean it’s gotta be. This web site says if insects stopped dying we’d be overrun in forty-eight hours flat. And that hasn’t happened. So this thing must be targeted at us.

Andy: I’ve missed all this.
Gwen: I haven’t.
Andy: It’s quiet without you.

Andy: Planet Earth. On average, three hundred thousand people die every day. So if they stop dying, that’s an extra million people in just over three days. Add to that, five hundred thousand people born every day.
Gwen: That’d give us another million every two days. Plus the first million. Andy: Bloody hell.
Gwen: That’s the fastest population boom in history.
Andy: Well we’re gonna run out of room.
Gwen: Run out of food first. Guy on the telly was saying we’ve got four months—just four months. And then that’s it. Society just collapses. We’ll end up fighting each other for food like animals.

Esther: There’s nothing. There’s no news. The whole thing, it’s kind of intangible. How do you investigate something not happening? And all that Torchwood stuff, it’s gone up [?].
Rex: Oh yeah? So what’s Torchwood gotta do with it?
Esther: I don’t know. It’s sort of connected, isn’t it?
Rex: No. No it’s not. It’s a completely different case.
Esther: Sure. Of course it is.
Rex: Then why’d you mention it?
Esther: don’t know. Suppose it just happened at the same time.
Rex: So what is Torchwood anyway?
Esther: Um, some kind of British intervention agency. Closed down. Used to specialize in 456 cases and above.
Rex: So that first email with Torchwood—you know, the security breach—when did that come through?
Esther: This Sunday night. 22:36.
Rex: 22:36 was the last reported death. The last death on planet Earth.
Esther: Well that’s disputable. They said the last death was on Monday.
Rex: No no no. Monday is the same time. At 11:36. Washington DC is twenty-two hours behind. That’s 11:36. Both those things happened at the same time. Don’t you see? You were right. It’s all connected. Torchwood’s the key to this whole thing.

Rex: And what the hell is this bridge? Severn Bridge?
Esther: It connects England to Wales.
Rex: What, you mean Wales is separate? It’s like the British equivalent of New Jersey.

Rex: Now what is this. Wait a minute, I’ve gotta pay for this bridge? God damn Wales.

Rex: CIA.
Gwen: Yeah? So what?

News Anchor: Extraordinary scenes in Kentucky as the governor’s office releases Oswald Danes on parole. The charity Freedom and Liberty has employed a force majeur ruling to define Danes’ survival as an act of God. With liability now on the state to prove otherwise.

Rex: Hey hey hey! I had a pole through my chest. I was dead and then I wasn’t. I had to pay for this bridge. And now I want to know what the hell is going on, alright? Because I was dead. And now I’m not. And if that has anything to do with Torchwood or you or anyone, I need— You know, it would really help if I could hear myself think! What the hell is it doing?
Rhys: It’s a tourist thing.
Gwen: No. No, I don’t think it is.

Jack: I can’t leave you alone for a minute.
Rex: It’s you.
Jack: Never annoy me again. Now get in.

Jack: You there! CIA! Do something useful.
Rex: Wales is insane!

Rex: Who the hell are you people?
Gwen: Torchwood. {she fires a rocket launcher}

Cardiff, UK

Jack: I’m mortal. I don’t mend. I’m normal again. I’m plain old human.
Rex: You’re what?
Jack: Doesn’t concern you!
Rex: You talk some crazy shit, you know that?
Gwen: You should get that seen to.
Rex: Yeah, any minute now. {sirens approach} Here comes my ride. {the others run}
Gwen: Andy, you can’t do this.
Andy: Orders from above. I’m sorry. He’s in charge.
Gwen: Since when?
Rhys: He can’t arrest us. He’s American.
Rex: I hate to bust up your sweet little tea party, but this isn’t an arrest. This is a rendition. And on behalf of the CIA, under the 456 amendments to US code 3184, I’m extraditing this so-called Torchwood team to the United States of America. Now. Get me out of here. Take me home.

Rendition

Heathrow Airport, London, U.K. 11 am

Rex: You. World War II. I’ll take this.
Jack: That’s nothing. It’s harmless.
Rex: Then you won’t mind me having it.

Rex: What the hell do you think you’re doing here?
Lyn (Dichen Lachman): I’ve been told to assist you in escorting the prisoners to Langley.
Rex: No no no. This operation is mine. I thought of it, it’s my idea. My execution.
Lyn: You wanna piss on the plane? Make that yours too?

Rex: Come on, let’s go. Get up. Take the husband back to Wales. I’m arresting Torchwood. Is he Torchwood? No. He’s the spouse.

Rex: Just sit back and relax. The next six hours will be filled with boredom followed by monotony.

Esther: Sorry, Mr. Friedkin? I understand you’re handling the Torchwood thing. I’m Esther Drummond, analyst. I was liaising with Rex Matheson on the rendition and now he’s bringing those people back, I thought—
Brian Friedkin (Wayne Knight): This is a clandestine matter now. Not for the Directorate of Intelligence, understand?
Esther: Yes, but. The way Torchwood disappeared online, sir. I spent six months compiling the malware list—it’s kind of a passion of mine and, whatever that intrusion was, it was fascinating and… I just thought I could help.
Friedkin: So, ah, are you thinking of changing Directorates?
Esther: I wouldn’t mind going where the fun is.
Friedkin: That sounds like Rex. His idea of fun may be misleading.

Friedkin: So, ah, you’re working closely with him? He’s keeping you up to date?
Esther: Yes sir. We make quite a good team.
Friedkin: Well. I’ll bear that in mind. Thank you. Esther.

WWCN Studios, New York, New York, U.S.A. 9am

Oswald Danes: I spent six years in solitary confinement. That’s when you can really taste it. {the PA looks lost} The piss. The piss that they put in my food. Oh, I’d cover it with cream and gravy and salt but that’s the thing about piss. It has a way of enduring.
PA: Well you’re not in prison anymore.
Oswald Danes: Oh sweetheart, I am free on the most beautiful technicality. When the world’s stretched to a breaking point who knows when it’s all going to snap back.

Oswald Danes: There’s going to be a mob outside my door for the rest of my life. And life is now a very long time. So excuse me if I take food where I can find it.
PA: I hope you choke.

Mystery Triangle Phone: REMOVE.

Rex: Dr. Juarez. You have something that I want.
Dr. Juarez: You sound like my ex-husband.
Rex: So does he call wanting drugs and sex?
Dr. Juarez: Yes.
Rex: Good man, but for now I’ll just settle for the drugs.

City County General Hospital, Washington, D.C., U.S.A. 10am

Dr. Juarez: Oh my god, we’re doing it wrong. Everyone, we’re doing it wrong!
ER Doctor: We don’t have time.
Dr. Juarez: We have nothing but time. Nobody’s [expected] in here. Nobody’s going to die. The first sixty minutes after a trauma? The Golden Hour. There is no Golden Hour anymore. All our reflexes are wrong.

Charlotte Wills (Marina Benedict): Poor bastard.
Noah: Are you kidding me? You’re not feeling sorry for him?
Charlotte: No. But it’s a mess. The whole thing, it’s just a mess.

Danes: I don’t need you.
Jilly Kitzinger (Lauren Ambrose): I disagree, Mr. Danes. You have what we call “high media quotient.”
Danes: Oh, everybody hates me.
Jilly: No. No, that interview has you trending on Twitter and the hash tags as forgive. You’re really very good.

Jilly: Of course there’d be a fee, but I’d only take ten percent of your earnings.
Danes: Good luck. That’s ten percent of nothing.
Jilly: You didn’t get paid for that?
Danes: It was news show. They don’t pay.
Jilly: Oh, Oswald. That’s really very funny.

Jilly: There’s a good reason the churches are empty. People don’t want to hear about Heaven. They’d rather hear from the man who has gazed into Hell itself, and that’s you. Frankly I think if the Devil himself were to walk this earth, he’d need representation.
Danes: If the Devil himself walked this earth, he’d surely be working in PR.

City Hall, Washington D.C., U.S.A. 11am

Jim: The point is, the hibernation isn’t fixed. There’s a natural oscillation they’ve been tracking.
Oscillation? You mean like someone turning a radio dial up and down on life?
Well basically up. Yes.

Dr. Juarez: The human race has becoming germ incubators. Hospital beds are filling up because the people who should die, don’t. Including people with infections.

Dr. Juarez: Whichever way you look at it, this situation can only get worse.

Rex: It’d be really ironic if you were air sick. Dressed up like a Flying Ace and all.

Rex: What are you saying? Immortality leads to hypochondria?

Banker: We’d like to thank you for banking with us and discuss your investment options. Is this a good time?
Esther: No, actually, this isn’t a good time. {realizing} Investment options? I have nothing to invest.
Banker: Well fifty thousand dollars isn’t nothing, Ms. Drummond. I think you’ll find we can offer a very good return on a six month CD.
Esther: But I haven’t got fifty thousand dollars.
Banker: It was a wire transfer made at midday today.
Esther: Made by who?
Banker: There’s no name, only a passcode. But the transaction came from China.
Esther: I have to go.

Rex: You know no one can die.
Gwen: What if you’re wrong, Rex? What if your big success is one Welsh woman and a dead body? Huh?! Just search her, that’s all I’m saying. Search her.

Gwen: Just tell me. What’s EDTA?
Dr. Juarez: Ethylene diamine tetracyclic acid
Gwen: What’s that when it’s at home? I mean what is it made of?
Dr. Juarez: I don’t know, I’m a doctor. Not a chemist. Is there nobody in the entire CIA that’s a poisons expert?
Rex: Yeah, but the CIA just poisoned him.

Gwen: That was your last chance.
Lyn: Yeah? And what’re you gonna do about it? You’re the best England’s got to offer.
Gwen: I’m Welsh.

It’s proof. We have absolute proof. We compared the telomeres from yesterday with the telomeres from forty-eight hours ago. There’s no doubt. They’re shortening. Which means we’re still aging.
What kind of immortality is that?
Jim: It’s the story of Tithonus. One of the Greek goddesses asks Zeus to make Tithonus immortal, but she forgot to ask for eternal youth. He became so ancient and decrepit that he eventually shrank into a cicada. He begged for death.
This is no miracle. This just, this just means that sooner or later we’re all going to hell.

Jilly: I don’t suppose anyone actually borrows a cigarette though. It’s more like theft.

Dr. Juarez: I don’t need your help.
Jilly: I disagree.

Washington Dulles International Airport, VA, U.S.A. 5pm

Esther: We are being set up. They cleaned out your office and there’s fifty thousand dollars in my bank account. Whoever’s doing this, I bet they’ll be waiting for you when you arrive. Someone’s trying to erase Torchwood, right? What if they’re also trying to erase anyone who’s ever had any contact with Torchwood.

Gwen: You you get us arrested, you break up my family, you nearly get Jack killed. Why should we go anywhere with you?
Rex: Because I have a car.

Rex: Hey, did I tell you that they bribed me with twice as much as you?

Dead of Night

Rex: Who told you to set me up?
Friedkin: Rex! Put the gun down.
Rex: Because everywhere I turn, the whole CIA has been poisoned against me. By you! Now who told you to do it?
Friedkin: I don’t know what you mean!
Rex: Bullshit! You set me up, Friedkin. And you got paid to do it. Now technically we both know that I can’t kill you. But you see, beauty of this miracle is, if I shoot you just right, maybe you might live in agony for… who knows how long. Maybe a thousand years. Now you think about that.

Friedkin: Listen, Rex, you won’t find them. I never did. They’re everywhere. They know everything.

Jack: Not bad team. Not bad at all.
Gwen: What did we get?
Rex: We got a cell phone. So whoever made the Miracle, now we’ve got contact.

Washington, D.C., U.S.A.

Jack: You should be in the hospital.
Gwen: Hey. Cancel the sympathy. He can keep working. The bastard.
Rex: You’re just gonna keep going on and on about your kid, huh? Do you want her here with us? Hm? Maybe she can go play in that corner where the lead paint chips look extra tasty.

Jack: It’s as if some thing is willing them to go on. Each and every individual—forced into life.
Rex: That was me. All the way through my accident. Wide awake.
Gwen: You could feel everything that happened? It still hurt?
Rex: Yeah.

Esther: He cockblocked the ATF.
Gwen laughing: I have no idea what any of that means.

Rex: Are we really on a mission here?
Gwen: Yeah, well. Maybe this is the way Torchwood does things, mate.
Rex: Yeah well maybe you want to drive on the other side of the street, mate.
Gwen: Oh.

Rex: Alright, so do you want to come up with a plan. Or is that just the American thing to do?

Rex about Phicorp drugs: These are the same pills that I’ve been taking. The beauty of it is they’re non-narcotic. They keep you painless and wide awake. It’s the perfect drug for the New World order.

Gwen: These are all painkillers?
Jack: They’re ready for a war.
Rex: No. They were ready for the Miracle. Phicorp knew it was coming.

Dr. Juarez: This woman’s husband strangled her. She doesn’t die so he keeps strangling her. And now her brain is soup and her hyoid bone—her neck—is like dust. And you’re telling me that’s not murder?
Officer: We charged him with assault.
Dr. Juarez: That’s not enough! This is what murder looks like now.
Officer: Don’t blame me. We’re not even allowed to say “attempted murder” anymore because murder’s impossible. The whole system’s breaking down.

Jilly: I think we can help. Jilly Kitzinger. Hi. Pain management in newborns is something that we’ve already got going on at Phicorp. So we can roll out a strategy.

Someone got off a plane from New Delhi in Boston last night and now we’ve got cholera. I warned you.
Dr. Juarez: I seem to recall no shortage of clean water in Boston. Turn on a tap, gentlemen.

Rex: What’s the use. We discover this Phicorp shit but everyone’s been turned against us. We’re still on the run. We can’t trust anyone.
Esther: But they can’t have gotten to everyone we know. And they can’t be tracking our cell phones because they’re new.
Jack: I warned you. Whoever these people are, they’re good. And they’re ready for us. Which puts us back at square one. We tackle Phicorp ourselves.
Rex: And is that standard Torchwood policy?
Jack: I suppose it is. Yeah.
Rex: You know, you dress like it’s World War II so I don’t expect you to be up on current events, but there is no Torchwood! It’s dead. Gone. Buried.
Jack: It’s us.
Rex: As far as I can see, you got all your staff killed.
Jack: They were my friends.
Rex: Yeah, dead friends!
Esther: Rex, don’t.
Rex: “Rex, don’t.” Alright. You want me to stop, I’ll stop. Who the hell are you people anyway?

Esther: My apartment’s that way. Ten minutes down the freeway, turn off at Eleventh. Home.
Gwen: You’d be arrested on the spot.
Esther: And that’d be worse than this?
I’d be safe. I’d be warm. I wouldn’t be holding you back. I don’t know if I can do this.

George: What’s the latest from the White House, Candace? Are we getting any sort of clarity?
Candace: Well off the record, George, this Miracle is so impossible a lot of high-level officials are thinking the word “alien.” Meaning an intervention or at least an influence from beyond this world. But so far still, no one’s willing to say it out loud.

Cop: Don’t you worry, sir. Nothing on your face. You’ll still be nice and handsome for the TV. Should have run faster Oswald.

Dr. Juarez: I’m not the CIA, I don’t go undercover. But maybe I can get you inside.

Jack: Oo, that face. Rex doesn’t like his jokes too gay.
Rex: No. Rex doesn’t like men in their forties acting like they’re twenty.
Gwen: And we’ve got a winner. Now hush.

Esther: She did good.
Rex: Yeah.
Esther: Dr. Juarez. How’d you talk her into it?
Rex: Well it’s not exactly a professional relationship.

Esther: But if they know about the Miracle, does that mean they caused it?

Congressman Patrick Morgenthal (): Our modern drug prescription system has served us well for many decades. But times have changed. Times have changed a great deal. The need for drugs is far outstripping the access to the people with the means to prescribe them. Something has got to change. And that is why later today I will be introducing legislation to make all prescription drugs, all painkillers, antibiotics, almost all medications available without a prescription.

Esther: What are you smiling for?
Rex: I think we got ’em worried.

Danes: I felt her life leave, and she left through me. You know that feeling. I think you do. And I relive it, every single night, because that was the best moment of my life.
Jack: Now I understand. You’re doing all this because you’re searching for one thing. One simple thing. Execution. We’re without death, so you get to live. And it’s killing you.

Danes: I’m asking you now to join with me, in this enterprise, as we all walk across the fragile skin of this wide world together. The future is now endless. And it’s terrifying, I’m offering you my hand to walk on this long journey. Together. Walk with me. That’s all I ask. Walk with me.

Escape to L.A.

Washington, D.C., U.S.A.

Sarah Drummond: We’ve changed. All of us. Something in the air infected us. It’s godless.

Triangle Assassin (C. Thomas Howell): Confirmed. I’ve found Esther Drummond. The pathway to Torchwood is open and clear.
Triangle Voice: Follow her to Harkness. Do what you like with the others.

Ellis Hartley Monroe (Mare Winningham): Who is there to speak for the living? When the White House is silent, the Vatican is silent. The scientists are silent. Well I am not.

Venice Beach, California, USA

Dr. Juarez: Can’t get rid of you, can I, Dead Man Walking?
Rex: Yeah yeah yeah. What is this “Dead is Dead” shit? I see posters all over the place.
Dr. Juarez: It’s the latest campaign. As if Oswald Danes wasn’t bad enough, this one’s lead by Ellis Hartley Monroe. One of those small town mayors trying to make a name for herself.

Dr. Juarez: Ellis Hartley Monroe started the Dead is Dead campaign, and do you know why? She thinks we should treat people who should have died as if they’re already dead. And right now I think she’s got a point.

Doctor: So we just put everyone inside and close the door? Do you know what they used to call that in the old days? A plague ship.

Jilly: Phicorp has asked me to stay at your side—full time. Apparently someone over there believes you’re important. Who am I to argue.
Oswald: Gloriously. Bet that’s killing you,
Ms. Kitzinger. Because you can’t stand the sight of me.
Jilly: No I can’t. No sir, not at all. But it is not my job to like you.

Jilly: Between me and you, it’s your hands. I can’t look at your hands without thinking about what they did.

Oswald: You ever wonder why anyone considers me important?
Jilly: I’m sure someone’s got a reason.
Oswald: Would you like to know what it is.
Jilly: Very much so.
Oswald: How much do you know about our masters at Phicorp? Because I did a little searching of my own last night. It’s been a long long time since I was allowed online, so… I tried to find out who’s above Phicorp. Who owns them. But the strangest thing happened. The information just scattered away. All sorts of names and tangents and diversions, but nothing tangible. And that’s when I recognized the pattern. Because I’ve had a lot of experience perfecting how to hide myself online. And suddenly, I’m looking at someone else doing the same. But on a massive scale. Worldwide. I wonder why.

Jilly: Looks like you’ve got a rival. Better think of a line, Oswald. Or you’ll be yesterday’s news.

Rex Sr.: You and your precious government, you changed the rules on us. Don’t tell me this ain’t some damn experiment. I don’t want to live forever. Especially like this.

Rex Sr.: What did you come here for, Rex? Tell me that. What the hell did you come here for?
Rex: I got hurt, Dad. I got hurt bad.
Rex Sr.: So what? I been dying down here for fifteen years. You never once cared.

Ellis Hartley Monroe: No, that’s not fair, ladies and gentlemen. The slogan “Dead is Dead” is hardly appropriate on hospital grounds. But this project demonstrates the bold thinking that we need in America. Behind me, we have people in the right place. It’s as simple as that. People in the right place. Behind those doors, they pose no danger to society.

Oswald: Those cameras were here for me.
Jilly: I know. It’s just a timing malfunction, that’s all.
Oswald: The moment I lose my platform, I get thrown back to the mob. And I’m not doing that, do you hear me? I’m never going back. So if you don’t want me angry with you, missy—if you don’t want Phicorp angry with you—you’re gonna put this right. Is that understood?
Jilly: Perfectly.

Oswald: There are people out there who are preaching all sorts of dangerous lies about you. And who is out there talking on your behalf? Hm? I’m here to tell you, I will. I promise, I will. Because you need help.

Old man: I still recognize you behind that mask, you bastard.

Jilly: Dr. Juarez!
Dr. Juarez: This is disgusting.
Jilly: I know!

Triangle Assassin: It’s your system, which means it’s your fault. Because the next thing I need is the palm of your hand, and then one of your eyes. But just one.
Nicholas Frumkin: No!
Triangle Assassin: Don’t worry, no one dies.

Rex: But still, it must have been tough though.
Esther: There’s nothing else I could have done. She wouldn’t even let me see them. She had the house all barricaded up.
Rex: Wait, you saw the house?
Esther: Well, yeah. I—
Rex: You went by the house? What if you were followed?! My god, you’re such an idiot.
Esther: I’m doing my job, okay!

Rex: You compromised the security of the entire mission. Come on!

Jack: What happened?
Triangle Assassin: I did.

Esther: I’m so sorry.

Gwen: Who the hell are you?
Triangle Assassin: Name’s unimportant right now.
Gwen: Oh great, he’s cryptic.
Jack: What do you want?
Triangle Assassin: Well clearly, you dead.
Jack: Then why am I still alive?
Triangle Assassin: That’s the point. It’s gotta be said, Miracle Day has hardly been advantageous for those in my line of work. The day the killing stopped. But I can’t tell you, Jack, how wonderful it is—how truly wonderful it is—to meet somebody who’s mortal. It’s my Holy Grail.
Gwen: If he’s the only one that can die then it’s in your interest to keep him alive.
Triangle Assassin: That’s exactly what I’m doing. Haven’t you noticed the absence of killing?

Triangle Assassin: I’ve been paid to eradicate him, but that only makes me wonder why. What makes you so different?
Jack: I don’t know.
Triangle Assassin: And yet, you’re the only one left. The only true human.
Jack: If I knew I would tell you. I’m trying to find out the same thing myself.

Esther: Ask who’s employing him!
Gwen: Yes, I know. Thank you! Who employs you?
Triangle Assassin: Don’t you have any idea, Jack? They told me it was a very long time ago. Don’t you remember?
Jack: No. Who told you that?
Triangle Assassin: This would be so simple in the old days. Tell me what I want or I’ll slit her throat.

Triangle Assassin: You’re very special to them, Jack. They trust me enough to tell me that. And I hear rumors. Of miracles yet to come. A new society being forged here on Earth and I’d like to guarantee my place. So tell me. What did you give them so long ago?

Gwen: Tell me who’s employing you.
Triangle Assassin: You’ll never stop them. For this is who they certainly are. They are everywhere. They are always. They are no one. They have been waiting for such a long time. Searching the world for a specific geography.
Jack: What the hell does that mean?
Triangle Assassin: That means that they found it. And they’ve made it magnificent.
Jack: Who are they?!
Triangle Assassin: They once had names. Long ago. And those names—

Gwen: He was just about to tell us!
Rex: Thanks. Anybody? Thanks?
Gwen: And you shot him in the throat.
Rex: Yeah well, dead is dead.

Jilly: You are trending like never before, you clever bastard.

Triangle Voice: Mrs. Monroe. We’d like to apologize. We’re really very sorry about this. Indeed we’d like to imagine if time and tides had flown in a different way, we could have almost been friends. I hope that’s some consolation. At the end. Truth of it is, we liked your message, Mrs. Monroe. We liked your style. But we already have Oswald Danes. We don’t need another. And certain aspects of your strategy were revealing our hand just a little too soon. And we have been planning this so carefully for such a long time. Because we are everywhere. We are always. We are no one. And soon, the families will rise.

Jack: Thanks again for saving my ass yesterday.
Rex: I was saving her ass. Which is gravy.
Esther: I’m sorry I made such a mess of it.
Rex: That was your finally warning.

The Categories of Life

City Hall, Washington D.C., U.S.A.

Dr. Juarez: Excuse me, I’m on the medical panels. Where is everybody?
Aide: Oh, you didn’t get the email? Sorry. Those are done.
Dr. Juarez: Those are done? How are they done?
Aide: The report was sent to Congress today. The HHS secretary took it directly to the President. Now that the categories have been finalized it clears the way for a lot of legislation.
Dr. Juarez: Categories? What categories?
Aide: The categories of life.
Dr. Juarez: What does that mean?
Aide: Instead of dead or alive there are now three categories.

Rex: Dr. Juarez. I was right. I knew you’d call me back.
Dr. Juarez: Oh I’m doing a lot more than that. I’m joining the cause. Whatever you’re doing to fight this miracle, count me in. They just took control of life and death.

Newscaster: Under the Emergency Miracle Law, anybody designated as category one or category two must be taken to the new overflow camps. The scheme is already underway in the United Kingdom with the Prime Minister calling this a new age of care and compassion.

Swansea Bay, Wales, U.K.

Gwen: That looks like an old army barracks.
Mary: Closed down in 1996. Reopened two days ago. Designated an official overflow camp. {LOCAL FARMER says: “THEY GO IN, BUT NO ONE COMES OUT”} That’s where they’ve taken your father. And that’s where you’re going. To get him out.

Cowbridge Overflow Camp, Wales, U.K.

Gwen: How many camps nationwide?
Andy: Thirty-five so far. I mean fair do’s, it might be chaos but at least it works.
Gwen: Andy, don’t be so thick.
Andy: Well it’s nice to have you back.

Military Officer: Given time we will have this facility open. And happy. And running like clockwork with access for all. But right now we have cholera. And dysentery. And swine flu. And every single patient needs immediate definition under the three categories. So it’s a lock down. No one is allowed in and no one is allowed out. When the situation changes we’ll let you know.

Venice Beach, California, U.S.A.

Esther: Do you think I’m useless?
Jack: No. I think you’re new to all this.
Esther: Yeah, but I’m CIA.
Jack: So’s Rex. But he’s just pretending. And that’s the big secret, Esther. At times like these, the game goes to the person who speaks with the loudest voice. But pretty much everyone just wishes their mother was here.

Rex: Vera, this is Jack Harkness.
Jack: We keep meeting. It’s like destiny.
Rex: Yeah. He likes to call himself Captain Jack, but I’m not buying it.

Jack: We’re a bit short of room.
Vera: That’s okay.
Jack: But I suppose you two… I mean, you’re gonna share. Or is that none of my business? I mean, you’re both… Didn’t you?
Vera: I’ll sleep on the floor.
Rex: Yeah, thanks for nothing.
Jack: Sorry, my mistake. Or are you not buying that too?

Vera: So this name. Torchwood. You’re like investigators?
Jack: More like freedom fighters.
Vera: That makes you sound like terrorists.

Rex: Wait a minute. When I got hurt I should have died. And I was category one. But now I’m healing. So I’m category two. So which one am I?
Vera: Well that’s the point. People don’t fit categories.

Rex: I still don’t see it though. What does Phicorp get out of this? I mean how do they profit?
Vera: You think they caused the miracle?
Rex: Well they had advanced knowledge but they just deal in pharmaceuticals. It’s gotta be bigger than that.
Vera: So you’re just looking for someone behind Phicorp?
Rex: Right.
Esther: And whoever that is, maybe they need the overflow camps for a reason. Because I have been looking into the NORAD satellites and the building specs—sorry, I’ve been overlaying documents. Look. This is our nearest overflow camp in San Pedro. These are the specs that we got from the Phicorp server. Spot the difference? Look at the building on the plans. It’s called the module. But where is it on the photograph?
No module.
Jack: There’s a module on the plans, but not on the photos. It doesn’t exist.
Gwen: No. Hang on. I heard somebody refer to the module today.
Esther: Exactly. And that’s what I’ve been wanting to show you.
The module’s been masked. That’s what they do in military installations.
Esther: That’s right. So I went into NORAD and I got the undoctored photographs. The buildings exist. Half of these are old army camps just being converted. And now anything [??] the module is just hidden from view so we can’t see what’s going on.

Vera: They could be cultivating. Making diseases to make more customers. Using category one patients like petri dishes.
Esther: It could explain the rush to strip away their human rights.

Rex: Infiltration is specialized work and this time I’m pulling rank. I’m the only one that can get to the heart of this category one thing and you know why? {he opens his shirt} Because I’ve had this.

Jack: I’m going with you. I don’t know, I could be your… assistant.
Esther: We told you, not a chance. That assassin said
that you’re too connected. And besides, you’re too fragile, Mortal Man. {she kisses him on the cheek}
Jack: All I get is a kiss?
Esther: You look after yourself. You’re unique. You’re Category Jack.

Jilly: Here is a rough draft of what they want you to say. The key word is revelation. You say revelation, the Phicorp logo comes up, and I mean massive. They actually put “revelation” in all caps.
Danes: Why was this written out for me? I’d rather use my own words.
Jilly: Oh really? Oswald. That’s sweet. Take it.

San Pedro Overflow Camp, U.S.A.

Colin Maloney: Look at you, you’re thin as a twig. Bet you’d snap easily.
Vera: I’m getting there, yeah.

Miracle Rally, Los Angeles, U.S.A.

Jilly: Here’s a new copy of the speech. They’ve added some stuff in about a lifetime of penitence, etc.
Danes: I understood that I was supposed to have a dressing room. Did they run out?
Jilly: Hm? No. No. There’s plenty of dressing rooms. Actually I just checked. You’d be surprised—genuinely chic. I’d imagined this place to be all concrete.
Danes: Where’s mine?
Jilly: Tiny little problem. Certain other people in certain other dressing rooms, they don’t want you anywhere near them. And we’re talking pretty serious names here. It’s a definite ixnay on the Oswald—
Danes: But that’s your job! You represent me! You get me a room!
Jilly: Don’t get angry. Careful with the blood lust. It’s showing.

Colin Maloney: I want you to meet Ralph. He’s my personal escort when I’m on the lot.
Col. Ralph Trane (Fred Koehler): Good to meet you, Doctor.
Vera: You too, Ralph.

Colin Maloney: This is my first tour but I think we might get some important people wanting to visit, you know? We got a line on Hilary I’m feeling really good about.
Vera: Hillary Clinton?
Colin Maloney: Duff. Hilary Duff.

Cowbridge Overflow Camp, Wales, U.K.

Geraint: What are you wearing? Pajamas?

San Pedro Overflow Camp, U.S.A.

Rex: This must be the module. I’m inside. As you can see they, ah, they treat the patients like objects. {he checks a wall}. This wall is cold. I was thinking it might be brick, but… ceramic, maybe? These people are still alive. I’m starting to think I’m in a refrigeration unit. …Just for the record. This man’s warm. Which seems strange in this cold place.

Vera: Do you realize what happens when you make somebody One?
Maloney: I think we should step outside. We’re disturbing the patients.
Vera: What else are you hiding?

Vera: That’s why a system like this is never going to work. Because it’s always going to be run by men like you!
Maloney: So what are you going to do, what are you going to do? Report me?
Vera: Oh I’m going to do more than that. I’m going to have you prosecuted.
Maloney: Oh you’re so full of it.
Vera: You’re going to be prosecuted for causing harm to those people in your care. And you will be found guilty as charged. I guarantee you’re going to jail, you stupid little man.

Ralph: Colin, think what you’re going to say, okay? ‘Cause someone’s gotta hear those gunshots.
Maloney: It was a door. It was a door! Hear that? Hear that everybody? It was a door! It was only the door! Get me a car.

Ralph: What is this place?
Maloney: Okay, take the car. I’ll walk back. You didn’t see anything, okay?
Ralph: Colin, you’ve just got to stop and think. This is murder.
Maloney: No it can’t be. Don’t you get that? It’s a brand new world, Ralph. A world without death. Which means there is no murder.

Ms. Kitzinger. Just wanted to say, you’re doing a very good job.
Jilly: Thank you. And you are?
Oh this isn’t about me. You’re the one being noticed.
Jilly: By who?
The right people.
Jilly: Good.
Excellent.

Jilly: Who are you?!
Jack: Don’t miss the speech.
Jilly: One more thing, soldier. {he turns and she snaps his photo}

Oswald: The truth is I know what I am. I know what you are too. Yes, I do. Each and every one of you. Because I know for certain what has happened to the human race. I know, because this has happened before. Fifty thousand years BC. What’s called the great leap forward. Human beings suddenly, we started to bury our dead. We created art and money. And love. They loved. They learned to love. We made a leap from animal to human. ANd now, right now, in our very own lifetimes it has happened again. The next great leap. We have made it from animal to human to what? This is the question. After Miracle Day, what are we now? I know. This is something I know. Because I am the man who has lost Heaven forever. So I can feel the truth of it. I’m telling you, man has risen again! Now, he has a new name. And his name is Angel. Angel. Angel. We are angels. We have been helped. We have been purified. We have been given life unending. We are the first angels on Earth. And I promise you this, there are even those who have been planning for this. The agents of angels in this brand new world. I’m telling you right now, they stand amongst us. Yes! For this is my revelation!

The Middle Men

Phicorp Central, Los Angeles, U.S.A. 10:00 AM

Janet: Stewart. Is everything all right? You don’t seem happy.
Stewart Owens (Ernie Hudson): Everything’s fine. We’re living in miraculous times. I couldn’t be happier. You shouldn’t call me Stewart in the office.
Sorry. Mr. Owens.

Of course suicide is impossible now, but people are becoming inventive. They’re finding ways to get as close to death as possible. That’s the philosophy of the 45 Club. People who believe that jumping from forty-five floors up or higher is the only guaranteed way to lose consciousness forever.

Owens: Of course you are aware the changes going on in the world.
Zheng: Yes. My uncle was dying. Now he’s not.
Owens: I’m trying to understand what happened, whether Phicorp had anything to do with it. I believe this construction site is key.
Zheng: I asked my uncle what happened. He told me to never question a miracle. You may not like what you find.
Owens: He may be right.
Zheng: Call me back in a few hours.

Owens: What did you find?
Zheng: A dead end.
Owens: What do you mean? What are they building?
Zheng: There’s nothing there. I looked. I found nothing. Nothing at all. Goodbye Mr. Owens.

San Pedro Overflow Camp, California, U.S.A.

Rex: My name is Rex Matheson. I’m with the CIA. I’m on an operation inside the San Pedro Overflow. No, strike that. I’m not with the CIA. Or a US government authority. I’m with Torchwood. And we’re gonna expose everything that’s going on here. Everything that I’ve just witnessed. […] They’re calling them category one’s, and from what I’ve seen, don’t ever let them call you that. The minute you hear “category one,” you better get the hell out of Dodge. Because they are going to burn you. That’s what this place is for. Incineration. And we all know the drill. They’ll start with the category ones. The ones who can’t protest. Then they’ll go on to convicted felons or illegal immigrants—hell, anyone we just don’t like. Because everybody gets sick. Which means one day everybody ends up here. Those ovens are waiting for all of us.

What happened to her?
Not any problem. Not anymore.

Ralph: Colin, that module thing. What happens there?
Maloney: It’s Mr. Maloney, and it’s “sir”.
Ralph: I’d like to know, sir, what happens in that module?
Maloney: It’s not my fault. It’s the system. The module was storage and we’re supposed to use it as storage until some senator signs some paperwork and gives some command. I just did things a little early, that’s all.
Ralph: But what did you do?

Maloney: The modules were designed to kill. Therefore death within this compound is legal.
Ralph: How does that work?
Maloney: Because I say so.

Rex: It’s a lock down. Yeah. Look at that, they’re closing the gates on the slaughterhouse. There’s no way they’re stopping me. I will get this evidence out.

Cowbridge Overflow Camp, Wales, U.K.

Dr. Patel: Category Ones are dead. That’s the law. Under the emergency rulings for the sake of public health, category ones can be incinerated en masse.
Gwen: Well I’m glad you’ve got the law on your side.

Janet: Please, you can’t tell anybody about us.
Jack: I won’t.
I just want some information from your boss.
Janet: I wouldn’t do anything to hurt him.
Jack: Sweet Janet Rae. I wish he felt the same about you.

Stewart: The truth about what?
Jack: The Miracle. How was it done, why was it done and how can it be undone.
Stewart: Why would I have the answer?
Jack: When the day came, Phicorp was ready. We found warehouses stocked with painkillers, waiting for the miracle to come along.
Stewart: That’s your smoking gun?

Stewart: It’s not me you’re after. In fact I’ve been trying to find out the truth just as much as you. I’m not a bad man, Mr. Harkness.
Jack: Captain.
Stewart: I’m not a bad man, Captain. I’m not a good one either. I’m a middle man in every sense of the word.

Stewart: You have a rather archaic view of good versus evil don’t you?

Stewart: I’ve sent agents all over the world, following the paper trail, the backroom deals, the holding companies within holding companies. That’s when I came face-to-face with the true face of evil.
Jack: The system itself.
Stewart: Precisely.

Stewart: Someone is playing the system right across planet Earth with infinite grace. Beyond any one person’s sight. Now I’m sorry Captain. But Phicorp isn’t controlling this. Profiting, yes. But this is part of a much larger design. Way beyond any of us.
Jack: But how can you be part of it and not know what’s going on?
Stewart: Let me give you an example. These warehouses full of drugs. No doubt you’d love to uncover an incriminating memo, dated before Miracle Day, signed by me, authorizing the stockpiling of painkillers. The truth is, a pattern like that began say, maybe five years ago. When the system dramatically increasing production at random factories around the world. Based on market share projections.

Jack: So that means everyone’s to blame. Everyone and no one.
Stewart: Whoever’s behind this, they don’t show themselves. Not to me, not to you. But to play the system like this—the markets, the politics, industry—they had to be planning this for a very long time. I wish I knew who they were.

Jack: I was told that the Miracle involves geography. Does that mean anything?
Stewart: No. But there is one word that my operatives picked up, dating back to the mid-90s and then erased.
Jack: What is it?
Stewart: “The Blessing”.

Stewart: There was a document from Italy, from a source inside the Council of Ministers. A contact then-deceased. It simply referred to the Blessing. It said, “They have found The Blessing.”

Rex: Just need to go out for a cigarette.
Who the hell are you?

Ralph: Someone’s breached the compound, someone with a camera.
Maloney: No no no. Nothing’s going wrong. Nothing nothing nothing.
Ralph: He wants to talk to whoever’s in charge.
Maloney: No he doesn’t. No no no he doesn’t.

Rex: They built ovens. And you’re the director. So you know that.
Maloney: I’m not in charge of policy. We had instructions that got sent out nationwide—worldwide—and we had orders from above not to say anything. I just did as I was told.
Rex: Okay. All right. Okay, you’re the middle man. I get it.

Rex: What happened?
Esther: I killed him. Oh my god, I killed him, Rex.
Rex: No you didn’t. No one dies. He’s just a category one now.

Ralph: This has got to stop!

Rex: Well all the guards are going. Regular army’s coming in. They’ll shut it down.
Esther: It was sanctioned. By the government. And they’ve got my name. They’ve got my name, I was on staff as Esther Drummond.
Rex: Esther, listen. Stop it, okay? Just stop it. You saved me.
Esther: I spent all that time wanting a job like yours. Look at me now.
Rex: It’s okay. You’re allowed to feel like this. Come here. {he kisses her forehead} But listen to me. This is not over. Not for Torchwood. And I need you in this fight. So get it together. And do it fast.
Esther: Done. I’m fine now. I’m ready.
Rex: Yeah. Me too.

Voice: Lenses.
Gwen: What did you just say?
Voice: Lenses.

Voice: We have your mother. We have your husband. We have your child.
Gwen: Who are you? What do you want? What do you want?!
Voice: Bring us Jack.

Immortal Sins

Ellis Island, New York City, USA
1927

Colassanto (Daniele Favilli): You’re still here. I thought you’d be in the city by now.
Jack: Time to spare. Waiting for the next boat to Manhattan.
Colassanto: I am also waiting for a boat. Mine goes all the way back to Italy.
Jack: Right. That’s what they do with thieves.
Colassanto: The interesting fact is, they do it also with people who forge Visas.
Jack: Good eye.

Jack: What’s your name?
Colassanto: Angelo Colassanto.
Jack changing the Visa: Angelo Colassanto. It’s not magic. It’s technology. Sometimes they’re indistinguishable.

Voice: Keep the lenses in. We are watching.

Rex: How many views have we got now?
Esther: Over five million. People are setting up memorial services for her too. Just random people who didn’t even know her. I just, ah… you got the footage. That’s gonna make the difference, but I’ve been meaning to say… I know that that must have been… I’m sorry.
Rex: I gotcha.

Rex: Maybe her death has changed things. They shut down the camps.
No, the paused the camps. That’s all they’re saying. “Paused”. And while the politicians are all denying everything, those ovens are still out there. Waiting to burn.

Jack: What are you looking for? I mean in America.
Colassanto: Speed. Change. New things. People moving so fast they’re not looking at me. So I can move fast on my own. Faster than anyone.

Voice: He always lies.
Gwen: Oh. Whoever this is, they know you.

Colassanto: Besides. I always hoped, if God is love, maybe he loves me too.
Jack: That’s blasphemy.
Colassanto: I think that’s Christianity.

Colassanto: Did I pass? Can I stay with you like the Doctor, learn all of the secrets?
Jack: Here’s one of the secrets: run.

Guy on Left: I don’t know. I just don’t know what it is.
Right: How much is the butcher asking?
Bald: Ten thousand. Not too much for something with so much potential.
Left: And we’d own him. Together.
Bald: A partnership. What do you say?
Left: Agreed.
Right: Agreed.
Bald:
Agreed.

Jack: Who were the three men?
Colassanto: What men?
Jack: There were three men. Like they were making an agreement.
Colassanto: I don’t know.

Mystery Woman (Nana Visitor): Captain Harkness. The last mortal man. It has been a long journey.

Esther: I was just checking the cache on the I-5s. Look what it says.

Andy: I’ve never shot anyone before.

Rex: Next time ask for help. I’m sick of Torchwood acting like amateur clowns.

Mystery Woman: I don’t see that anything’s changed. You’re still coming with me.
Jack: Why would I do that?
Mystery Woman: You’ll want to come with me. Because I can take you to the one man who knows how the Miracle began.
Jack: Who’s that?
Mystery Woman: Angelo. Angelo Colassanto. He’s waiting for you, Jack. He’s been waiting for such a very long time.

End of the Road

Colasanto Residence, Nevada, U.S.A.

Olivia Colasanto: They’re with me. They’ve agreed to leave their weapons behind.
Rex: But Esther’s gonna stay outside.
Olivia Colasanto: Why? What for?
Rex: She’s gonna keep an open relay to a hard drive back in Los Angeles. We go through those doors and disappear, then we have a record. Okay? So tell your goons to leave her alone.

Olivia: He talked about you all the time, Jack. This immortal man in old New York. He never forgot.
Rex: You telling me the whole world got screwed because two gay guys had a hissy fit?
Gwen: Rex, get back in your cave.

Olivia: You inspired him. You proved immortality was possible. And he devoted the rest of his life to finding out how to live forever.
Jack: And he did it? He’s still alive, he’s still young?
Olivia: Oh yes, he’s still alive. Angelo Colasanto is still very much alive. But he’s not young. My grandfather waited all this time to live forever. And his wish came true. Too late.

Jack: What’s wrong with him?
Olivia: At his age? Just about everything.

Olivia: After everything I’ve heard about Torchwood technology you’re going to rely on an open handset?
Rex: Yeah well we had to leave LA in a hurry. Thanks to someone I could mention.

Rex: What the hell’s going on with the stock market?
Olivia: They’re falling. It’s been inevitable since Miracle Day. Which I reckon is part of the plan.
Gwen: So you put a gun to my daughter’s head for what? For this? So you could get your revenge on Jack?
Olivia: We weren’t rying to hurt you. I was carrying out my grandfather’s final wish. To keep you safe.
Gwen: So you don’t want them dead—
Olivia: Wait wait wait. Do you mean you were protecting me?
Gwen: Funny way of going about it.
Olivia: There’s a crucial instruction. My grandfather cared for you. I don’t. You might be important in some way we’ve yet to work out so it’s best to keep you intact. But that’s as far as the sentiment goes.

Gwen: Hold on though. He didn’t cause this. Angelo didn’t cause the Miracle?
Olivia: No. He lived this long through natural means.

Olivia: Prolonging life is simple. But no one’s worked out how to make a profit at it so it’s not advertised.

Olivia: You are not the only remarkable thing on this earth, Jack. Consider the jellyfish. The species turritopsis nutricula is considered to be immortal. Its cells undergo a process called transdifferentiation. Quite simply, it can revert to a younger state and grow old again. And then repeat. Without limit. It’s possible there are individual jellyfish on this planet that have existed for thousands and thousands of years.
Jack: I’m not as special as I thought.
Olivia: You never were.

Olivia: My grandfather was not alone.
Jack: Who were the others?
Olivia: Well the story says there were three men. Each representing a different family. And when you were being murdered over and over again, these three men came to witness your resurrection.
Jack: I saw them. They made a deal.
Olivia: They formed an alliance to purchase the power of resurrection. And when you escaped the three families swore that they’d find the gift again.
Jack: What were their names?
Olivia: The Ablemarch family, the Costerdane family and Frines.

So what happened then? 1928. What did they do next?
Olivia: Well they lost Jack but they still had his blood.
Jack: I thought they were draining it away. But they were collecting it.
Olivia: All they had to do was figure out how to use it.
Jack: But that doesn’t work. There’s nothing special about my blood in itself. That’s not what made me immortal.

Olivia: Whatever they were planning, my grandfather wasn’t included.

Gwen: But what did these families do to the world? They start in Manhattan and eighty years later the whole of the planet becomes immortal?
Jack: And I become mortal.
Olivia: In 1998 we intercepted a message. It was just one word. “Blessing.”
Jack: We’ve heard about The Blessing. They found it. Whatever The Blessing is, the three families found it.
Rex: And now it’s time we found them.

Rex: Esther, you got any news for us?
Esther: This is weird. There’s no one name Ablemarch, Costerdane or Frines. I mean literally, there’s no such names. It’s nothing, it’s blank. They don’t exist.

Friedkin: We gotta finish it before the rest of the CIA arrives.

Rex: Just tell us where we can find the three families. Quickly.
Olivia: You’ll never find them, that’s the point. They came out of New York with the motivation of keeping this secret. Where’s the best place to hide yourself? In plain sight.

Esther: Of course it’s Friedkin. If anyone’s working for the three families, it’s him.
Friedkin: That’s enough! Keep them covered. We may have to end this with an unfortunate number of category ones.

Alan Shapiro (John De Lancie): Why is Friedkin inside? Who put him in the field?
CIA Agent: Rex Matheson is his division, sir. He feels personally responsible.
Shapiro: Yeah, well he should’ve waited for me, the fat ass.

Rex: Mr. Shapiro, sir. Tell me something. All that time I was on the run, did you really think I was a traitor?
Shapiro: There was evidence—woven through your records—going back ten years or more. Whoever these people are, they’re a lot smarter than Friedkin. And they’re operating on all sorts of different levels.
Rex: Yeah, but now we’ve got them on the run.
Shapiro: Maybe.

Shapiro: People seem to be talking over me. Which is fascinating. And rare. And forbidden. {to Gwen} I’ll come back to you.

Shapiro: I am sick of her already. Can we deport her? Let’s deport her.

Shapiro: What is it with you, Red Baron? You got Snoopy up your ass?

Esther: He can’t be dead, Jack. He just can’t be. That’s impossible. Nobody can die, he’s just category one.
Jack: I scanned him. He’s gone.
Rex: Then is it everyone? I mean, did the world just change back? And if so what happens to me? Hm? I was supposed to die. {to an agent} You, tell Langley. Go online, check the hospitals, check with everyone. ‘Cause if he’s dying then who else is dead?

Shapiro: How? Only him. No one else. The only man in the whole wide world to die. The Miracle continues minus Mr. Colasanto. So how did he do it? {Jack’s silent} We’re taking the body for autopsy. Any idea what we’re going to find?
Jack: I don’t know. We should go—
Shapiro: No no no no. Nobody is leaving. This house is secure.
Jack: It’s not a crime scene.
Shapiro: Are you sure about that? Dying of old age can now be considered a crime. Something happened here. And we re going to search this place for information. And nobody is going to leave until we know exactly what happened. So you can stay just where you are, Captain.

Noah Vickers : Welcome back, Rex. Things were kind of quiet without you.

Esther: Costerdane, Ablemarch and Frines. Problem is, I’ve looked, there’s no one with these last names.
Rex: But there has to be. I mean, they’re names. What names aren’t names?
Esther: These names. According to every site I could think of, the names didn’t just die out. They never existed.
Charlotte Wills: Could be done. It’s happened before. At the end of the second World War all the Hitlers disappeared from the Berlin phonebook. Change your name, go back and erase passport records, birth certificates. Do that for decades and you’d be buried in the fabric of the world.
Esther: There’s gotta be a papertrail.
Charlotte: Oh, I was born for this.

Dallas, Texas U.S.A.

Jilly: […] Madison Weekly. She’s the Bissected Bride. You know, car accident sheared off everything below the bikini line. Got married a week later propped up on a box. Basically she’s made up of positive thinking and colostomy bags.

Jilly: Shawnie Yamaguchi?
Shawnie Yaguchi (Constance Wu): That is correct.
Jilly: Go get me a sandwich. Tomato and swiss on sourdough. Let’s see how well you cope with that. And then you can find me a prostitute.
Shawnie Yaguchi: I’m sorry?
Jilly: Start with the sandwich.

Shawnie: I don’t mean to be rude, but I don’t know how you put up with him.
Jilly: Oh I won’t have to. Not for much longer.
Shawnie: I’m sorry, what do you mean?
Jilly: Never mind. Off you go.

Sarah Drummond: This whole world’s changed, Esther. This body, it’s without a soul.
Esther: Don’t say that. What about the girls? Think about the girls.
Sarah Drummond: I’ve put them on the list too. Sometimes I wonder what keeps us from falling straight through the earth, to the other side of the world.

Mary Cooper: You tell her from me, I had a gun held to my head. My life was in danger. And her father’s. Right inside our own house. And all because of her. So you tell her, Don’t give up. Go get the bastards. Whatever it takes.
Rhys: Tell her yourself.
Mary Cooper: No. I’m watching TV.

Shapiro: I’ve read the Torchwood file. Is this extraterrestrial?
